Los árboles mueren de pie
2026, escultura / sculpture

Trees Die Standing
“Los árboles mueren de pie” (Trees Die Standing) is the title of a play by Alejandro Casona — a Spanish playwright exiled in Argentina, where the play premiered in 1949. I chose to read it because of its title. In the story, the grandmother is compared to a tree: she endures her tragic fate in silence. “Dead inside, but still standing. Like a tree.”
The work emerges from the encounter between a handsaw and miniature artificial trees — salvaged from the dismantling of the sales model for the building next to my studio. Since 2023, I have witnessed hundreds of houses in the neighbourhood, along with their trees, disappear to make way for four buildings of more than twenty storeys. The neighbourhood vanished. Some of the larger trees were removed and carried away on large trucks to be sold; others, with municipal signs encircling their trunks, simply disappeared. With them went the silence, the refuge of forgotten cats and birds. The landscape became a building, and the sun hides behind it. The studio endures as long as it lives — so that it can continue to be a space for collaborative art.
A tribute to the trees that remain standing. Their existence is to generate life. Their death continues to be life. My respect for the living-dead trees.
